A 17th Century waterway whose advanced construction techniques far surpassed those of the 18th century canal builders
The Enfield Loop - 3
Approaching the northernmost extremity of the loop
By Enfield Grammar School
Approaching the Police Station and Enfield Civic Centre
The Enfield loop ends by the Civic Centre and the rest of it is piped. However, the course of the loop can be more or less followed along the roads and cul de sac to the next watered section which is by Enfield Town rail station. The loop is dependent on rainfall and natural drainage, but the piped section can carry a small feed off the Main New River which is used to replenish the loop when it is neccessary.
The course of the New River ran between the police station and Civic Centre before turning sharp south
The New River reappears on the south side of the Civic Centre, in what can only be considered an ugly setting
Its a little more attractive just to the south though! But not for long...
Here endeth the New River just south of the Civic Centre
From this point the old course can be followed overground through the back of Enfield Town Centre
This parking lot is on the course of the New River
The New River's course turns eastwards to align with Church Street once again
